GaparAytievNationalMuseum of Fine Arts in Bishkek is an essential pillar of contemporary art development in Kyrgyzstan. Founded in 1935, in the Soviet Union, its collection counts more than 17000 exhibition units, mainly of Russian and Kyrgyz artists of the XIV-XX centuries. The museum collection includes drawings, paintings, decorative arts and calligraphy. A special section of the museum shows the development of Kyrgyz folk art in its many displays. In addition, the museum regularly holds international exhibitions of contemporary art, as, for example, an exhibition of German artist and photographer Wols.

Department of decorative and applied art was founded in 1967. The basis for its creation were the exhibits referred from the main museums - The State Tretyakov Gallery, the Hermitage, the State Museum of Oriental people art in the 40-50s years. Since that time it was organized more than 40 expeditions in the regions of the republic and collected about two thousand works of folk art of the Kyrgyz. Now the department has a collection of more than three thousand items, representing all kinds of traditional folk art. - Felt (shyrdak, alakiyiz, felt products), utensils made of wood and leather (utensils), fabrics, woven carpets (thermal Tharapita, bashtyk, kurdzhun), embroidery (carcass-kiyiz, tekche, ayak-capt), men`s and women clothing, jewelry (bilerik, trample, jay, etc.), objects decoration horse (terdik, Tokum, dzhulpoch) and contemporary decorative art.

The beginning of acquisition of the sculpture collection dates back to the end of the 30-ies. Currently the sculpture collection has more than 900 items. In the arsenal of the stock represented by all types and genres of easel sculpture, monumental projects, medal art. The Museum houses a valuable collection of works by major Russian artists, who worked in the second half of the XIX and XX century, including such names as Lansere, A. Golubkina, S. Konenkov, I. Ginsburg, M. Vrubel, Mukhin. The unit works by F. Abdurakchmanova, A. Ambrazyunasa, B. Beard, L. Langinena, D. Jumadurdy, I. Ochiauri and other famous artists illustrate the uniqueness of the multi-ethnic arts of the former Soviet Union.
